Warning! Be careful what you post!

The below link is a story on CBS 11 TV's website. The Secret Service is warning people....yet again...about posting too much personal information on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter (and all the others).

I would also like to add something to this. The elderly and children are most often targeted. Just because you haven't 'friended' someone doesn't mean they can't get to your information. Be wary. If you have tweens and teens who are getting on these sites, sit down with them and talk about the dangers of posting TOO much information.

Social Networking sites serve as a convenient means of communicating information to lots of people and they can be very useful. Ask yourself this "Can the information I post be used to hurt me or my family?" If you can answer yes...then you may want to re-think posting it on your page.

Be wary my friends.
Ms. Kris

Christmas! Already? Really?

OK...now that I have your attention....

The advanced forms workshop we did at the 10am class on Saturday turned out really well. We will do this again on the first Saturday in December and hope to keep it up next year. Now if you're thinking you need to be a member of the Advanced Forms class to attend...think again! We were able to spend the class working on the finer points of the class form and even learned the Kung Fu walk. It's a great opportunity to really work on the class form at a much deeper level. So we hope to see you on December 4th!

The next Advance Forms Class meets Friday 11/12 at 7pm.

Thanksgiving is coming up...faster than my waistline wants to think about! We will have a modified schedule the week of Thanksgiving. Please make note:
  • We will have our normal schedule on Monday and Tuesday November 22 & 23.
  • SNAP will NOT meet on Wednesday Nov 24th.
  • We will be closed Thursday and Friday Nov 25 & 26.
  • We will have ONE Adult Class at 9am on Saturday Nov 27. (No Kids Class)
  • We will return to our normal schedule on Monday Nov. 29.
Then we roll into December!

We are planning a Kids Movie Night (otherwise known as parents night out...shhhhh....) Friday December 17th from 6-9pm. Cost is $5 per child. We encourage students to bring their friends. Movie TBA (but leaning towards How To Train Your Dragon or Karate Kid). Please mark your calendars and save the date.

SNAP Graduation will be Wednesday December the 15th.
KFSS Graduation will be Saturday December 18th. (promotions list to be posted this week)

We will have a modified schedule the week of Christmas and New Years which is posted on our website (www.rkmartialsciences.com then go to Calendar of Events). I'll send out an email on that later.

I hope everyone has a great week.
Ms. Kris

Updates for Week Ending 10/30/10

OK....we're starting to get into the holiday season. Attendance in class has been light all month so hopefully folks will remember to get their classes in BEFORE December 18 (which is KFSS graduation).

If you would like a DVD of GrandMaster Jimmy Woo's lessons video taped during Master Ted's time studying with GrandMaster Woo, a sign up sheet will be available in the lobby beginning today. Cost is $40 and you receive a DVD and written narrative of the class as well as the lesson taught. Only checks and cash will be accepted for this item. Please make your checks payable to Master Ted Sias.

Advanced Forms Class Schedule
We are going to begin to hold an advanced forms class during the 10am class on the first Saturday of each month beginning November 6th. This will give those folks who are unable to come on Friday's as well as those who may not have thought they would be interested an opportunity to increase their forms knowledge and apply the forms to actual lessons.

The schedule for Advanced Forms will be as follows (and is available on the website under Calendar of Events):

Nov 6th 10am
Nov 12th 7pm
Nov19th 7pm
Dec 4th 10am
Dec 10th 7pm

Then Advanced Forms class will break for the Christmas and New Years Holiday and return on the 14th of January 2011. As life sometimes DOES get in the way, please check the website for any changes or cancellations.

The December tentative promotions list will be available November 13th.

Water Damage at RKMSF - Update

We will be open for business tonight!

I went over to the school at lunch today. The fans and dehumidifiers did their job over the weekend. The carpet and walls have dried out (and the smell is gone!). There is still 1 fan going on a spot next to the front door so just be aware when you enter.

The baseboards won't be repaired until tomorrow, but this should not prevent us from having class. We will resume our normal class schedule this afternoon. So we'll see you in class.

Ms. Kris

Water Damage at RKMSF

All,
We have had to cancel classes this evening and tomorrow (Saturday) due to water damage inside the school from this week's storms. There are currently 3 VERY large dehumidifiers and 9 or 10 large fans drying out the wall along the south side of the building. The base boards have been taken off and holes drilled in the walls to allow the walls to dry. Basically...its a mess!

We should be able to resume classes on Monday at 4:30.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Please check the website for further updates.

Updates

I hope everyone survived the rain and resulting floods unscathed. The school sustained some water damage from leaks in the roof and around the base of the exterior walls. Nothing really serious but we will be drying out the carpet so it may look a little disorganized. Please bear with us.

Don't forget that tomorrow (Friday the 10th) is our advanced forms class at 7pm. Please make plans to be there! Remember, you need to know the current class form to attend.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Today is the Day!

Today is the first day of the Summer Quarter for KFSS students. Many of you have told me you will be vacationing over the next several weeks, some of our kids will be gone for the rest of the summer, so class attendance may be light, but we have so many new students that this is a great opportunity to get one on one time with the instructors!

SNAP graduation is THIS Wednesday June the 30th at 5pm.

Master Robert is out of town this week.

4th of July weekend - we will have our regular class schedule on Saturday the 3rd and be CLOSED Monday July 5th in observance of the holiday.

Message from Master Robert

Hi All,

I hope all is well with you and that Spring has been kind. I was in a meeting/training session this morning and something (actually several things) was said by the speaker that I really liked and appreciated. He said that if you ever feel you can’t learn something from someone then there is an ego/pride issue that needs to be addressed. He said he learns from everyone he meets. Sometimes it’s something pretty small, sometimes it’s pretty big but it’s always something.

The speaker was Rich Warren, who has written several books. Perhaps the best known is Purpose Driven Life. But I thought it was interesting that he made that point because we have talked about that on a number of occasions. He also said that you should learn something every day and the best way to do that is to PAY ATTENTION.

Why am I telling you this? Well, because it bears repeating. Think about it. If you learn something from everyone you meet think of the growth that you’ll have…not just in KFSS but in all things. I learn something from every class I attend…even the ones I teach! Because someone will ask a question or make an observation that improves my understanding.

Now…what’s the point? The point is as follows: Pay attention, keep an open mind, approach every class (and situation) with the expectation to learn something and then look for the something to learn. Not only will it make you a more effective KFSS practitioner, it will make you a more effective life practitioner.

Be safe and be alert,
Master Robert.

Instructor Blog - The Big Picture of Form

Hello Fellow Students,

When studying form, what are we searching for? Why do we put so much effort into a relatively simple series of stances and strikes? This is our opportunity to focus on the details of our art. I’ll go further to say that we do not always focus on the same details each time we do form, even the same form done multiple times. All of the fine points and focus areas are critical, but let’s think first about what we are studying as a guide for those details. Hidden between these simple stances and strikes is the core of the art. It is the time between that we must master.

To master this time, we must master balance. Our balance is based on our feet, but it is more than walking a tight rope. We are walking a tightrope during a fight. This is possible if we take that “tight rope”, our balance, with us wherever we step. Balance is not a fixed point on the ground. You’ve heard me say over and over that you must move your feet, take “cheater steps”, and bring your back foot with you. You MUST move with your balance. And remember that you must NOT leave your balance to deliver a block or strike. Don’t ever stretch for a strike or block or kick. If you are stretching, then you are not moving enough. But, you can not move enough by moving your feet alone.

Your arms are another critical piece of balance. I’ve also spoken several times about timing your blocks to begin soon enough to help you start moving, sizing them right to guide your step, and using them to sink your stance as you transition to strike. Apply the unbendable arm to your blocks. This reduces your arm range of motion, so you must compensate by moving your shoulders. Do not move like a robot or you lose the fluid power you were born with. Your whole body will move and twist in time with you step. In this way, your upper body (your whole upper body) can guide your stance toward the strike.

The most difficult piece is to bring it all together with timing that can only be learned and mastered by repetition. We will talk about that in the future. In the meantime, here are some things to think about …
  • Being and end each move from strength: a strong stance.- Use unbendable arms for your blocks and start your blocks with your cheater step (sometimes before) to get you moving.
  • Keep your arms and shoulders moving in a smooth motion to guide your step.
  • Make a complete block and not leave one side of your body unprotected.
  • Transition your block to strike as your step lands and bring your back foot with you as you strike.
  • Timing of the strike should be: Sink, Strike. One, Two in close succession.
  • Remember to block your entire body and don’t cut the block short. Blocks are circles or ovals, but not “D”s.
  • Use your block to lift and sink. When you’re block goes up, your body is lighter for the step. When your block goes down, your stance sinks for the strike.
Learning a form is only the first step. Once you have a form, make it truly yours. Make it a part of you through focused repetition. You may focus on different particular aspects or details, but always focus on balance. And above all … Do your form. Do your form. Do your form.

I’ll see you on the training floor. Until next time, walk the path.

Sincerely,
Jason

Instructor Blog - Advanced Forms

I thought I'd let some of the folks who make our school so special start telling you about what we're doing. I'll be posting blogs from our instructor's as they come in. Here is our first installment of the Advanced Forms Blog:

April 27, 2010

Hello Fellow Students,

First, I want to extend a heartfelt “Thank you!!” to all students in the Advanced Forms Class. Your positive feedback is humbling and sincerely appreciated. It is a special treat to explore the deeper levels of our art with like minded individuals. It is also an honor to contribute to RKMSF web site and communications. I can ensure that each post will be written from my heart. As always, I am ever open to questions and/or discussion on any subject I pen.

The success that I feel from the Advanced Forms Class is not based on attendance, even though that has been good (especially the last class on 4/23!!). Rather, I measure this success by the focus and determination of you, the students. Be proud of yourselves! The class could not succeed without your engagement. It is your excitement, focus, and determination that foster the interesting questions. No teacher acting alone could sustain the excellent discussions that we have enjoyed.

For those who have not attended the Advanced Forms Class, you are most welcome. There is only one prerequisite to this class: you must know the current class form. The class will be much more fulfilling with your curiosity and determination, so bring these too. I want to point out that the first student from the kids’ class joined us this past Friday. I was very impressed and hope for more participation from our younger brothers and sisters.

To pique your interest, here are some of the things we are studying in the Advanced Forms Class. Most of these principles and techniques I will only teach this class. Not everything is born from the ancient art of Tsoi Li Ho, but all will contribute to your personal development in Kung Fu San Soo as it has for me.

We have been looking at:
  1. Deeper details in the class forms.
  2. Class form using weapons (we are applying the broad sword now!)
  3. Linking class forms together (we will start this soon)
  4. A new form type: XingYi (or Hsing I).
  5. The 8 Section Brocade as taught to me.
  6. Various Hatha Yoga postures including some of the Sunrises.
  7. The mental and emotional aspects of fighting.
  8. Philosophy of Kung Fu San Soo and martial arts in general.
I look forward to writing more, and seeing you again on the training floor.

Sincerely,
Jason

Student Reviews

I recieved an email from one of our students about our Advanced Forms class:

I went to the Friday night Forms class for the first time last Friday. WOW!
What a new and interesting look into KFSS.
I recommend to anyone who is falling into ruts with their workouts or is starting to feel bored or feel like they are not progressing with their art attend Jason’s from class on Friday.
This class definitely gives you new ideas and help with improving your footwork and thinking about the art.

Updates Week Ending 3/13/10

What is that big bright orangy-yellow thing in the sky? Oh yeah...I think they call that the sun! It looks like we just might be able to dry out this week. However this IS Texas and as we know things do change quickly.

The advanced forms class was a big hit! And for anyone who says forms don't do anything for you...tell that to my body! An hour's worth of forms is a reeeally good work out! The next class will be Friday March 19th at 7pm.

We will make a slight adjustment for April as we ran into a parking situation with the Knight's 1st Friday Fish Fry. We will move to the 2nd and 4th Friday for April (4/9 and 4/23). Remember you need to know the current class form to attend.

We're coming up on mid-March and I know Spring Break is coming. RKMSF WILL be open all month long so if you are in town...we'll have a class for you.

The attendance/promotions list has been updated thru 3/6 and is posted in the lobby. Please make sure you check your class counts and promotion status.

3/27 at 9:30a is KFSS graduation. The doors will open at 8:30 so come early! If you have just joined us please come and be a part of the picture!

3/31 at 5pm is SNAP graduation. These folks have worked really hard so come and support them!
************************************************************************************
Looking ahead for April...we are planning to make a scheduling change on Wednesday evenings. Immediately following SNAP, we will be having a basic Self Defense class from 6-7pm. This class is open to the public and will be a 4 week course 1 day a week and the cost will be $40. It will focus on awareness, grabs, holds and escapes and general precautions. So if you know someone who is interested in self defense but really isn't sure they want to commit to a full kung fu program....this is an excellent opportunity!

If you are a current KFSS student and you are just starting out...this is also a good way to pick up some additional knowledge and skills. IF you are a seasoned KFSS student and are available...we always need seasoned folks to help. We are taking reservations now so call 817.590.8585 or email me at kris@rkmartialsciences.com. Class begins April 7th.

We will hold our KFSS class from 7-8pm on Wednesdays.

Have a great week and we'll see you in class!

Weather Updates - Friday Classes Cancelled, Late Start on Saturday

Well! While the main roads will be clearing later the residential streets may take a little longer. We are also looking at temps dropping into the 20's tonight and we know what that means....any water on the roads, bridges and underpasses will freeze. So....

We will cancel tonight's class (Friday) and Saturday's 8:30 class, and open for the 10am and 11:30 classes on Saturday.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at kris@rkmartialsciences.com or call 817.590.8585.

Be Safe and enjoy the snow! Its not everyday Texas sees 12 inches of snow!!!!

Weather Update-Thursday 2/11 Classes Cancelled

So unless you've been under a rock all morning you know its been snowing since early this morning. It is supposed to keep snowing until late this evening and the temperature is going to stay right around freezing and then drop below freezing this afternoon. The roads are going to get pretty dangerous so discretion being the better part of valor....we're going to cancel all classes today.

We'll play tomorrow by ear.

Stay Safe!

Ms. Kris

Updates Week Ending 2/6/10

2010 is rocking right along. January flew by and we're heading into mid February. KFSS graduation is getting close (March 27th) and I will have the tentative promotions schedule up in lobby this weekend.

Our SNAP graduation will be March 31st.

Weather Alert!!! By now most of you have heard that the DFW area is in for some wintry weather long about Thursday. We all know this can change in a heartbeat, but the weather folks seem pretty sure we're going to see some white stuff....when and how much is still an unknown. I will try to get an email out early, but if you don't see anything by 4pm, please check the website before coming to class.

Be safe out there!

See you in class!
Ms. Kris

Updates Week Ending 2/6/10

We're almost through the first week of February! KFSS Graduation isn't far off, so please be sure you're getting you're classes in now!

There will be an instructor's meeting THIS Friday (2/5) at 7pm at the school. All instructor's and ID's are encouraged to attend. If you haven't had an opportunity to learn the new form, this is a good time to learn.

The weather has cold and rainy and it's hard to get motivated sometimes to come to class. Remember, when you move around during Kung Fu, your body is creating the endorphins to feel so much better during the dark rainy months. So if you're feeling a little down and lethargic...come to class!!!!=)

See you there!
Ms. Kris

Updates Week Ending 1/23/10

We're halfway through the month of January! Today is a holiday for many schools. We will be open for classes as usual.

If you're like me...January is an insanely busy month! It's important to make time to train not only your body, but your mind as well. Stress can slow the bodies ability to heal and in some cases even cause illness. Make the time to de-stress your body and your mind...come to class! Stress can also cause one to miss key indications trouble is brewing. Its important to be able to focus on your surroundings in order to be safe. This is hard to do when you're mind is focused on something else.

See you in class!
Ms. Kris

Monday, January 11, 2010

Updates Week Ending 1/9/10

It is the beginning of the new quarter. (Or rather last week was...) I think the weather kept many folks away from class, but we did have some brave souls who faced the sub-freezing temperatures to come to classes.

I'd like to encourage everyone to get your classes in early so you are not scrambling at the end of the quarter to get your classes in. KFSS Graduation will be March 27th and SNAP will be March 24th.

Its been a very cold start to winter and it will likely continue off and on for the next several months. Please make sure you keep your body flexible by warming up and stretching often.

See you in class!

Ms. Kris

RKMSF Open for Classes tonight

Its going to be verrrry chilly, but the roads are clear and we WILL have classes as scheduled this evening.

Update - Weather 1/7/10

The arctic front that has been predicted all week finally arrived! (And it brought a friend....how thoughtful....NOT!) Anyone who has been watching the news knows many school districts and roadways in the area are currently closed (7:25am) due to black ice conditions and frigid temperatures that are not expected to climb above freezing today.

The ice is expected to evaporate (not melt) due to the high winds by about mid morning. IF the road conditions are clear this afternoon, we will hold classes tonight. PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE after lunch today and before you head to the school tonight. Any updates to the website after noon may not send an email update until late tonite or in the morning. If you have any questions, please call 817-590-8585.
