Talk about the weather in Texas! Man! 79 yesterday and 29 this morning! Well they always say "if you don't like the weather wait a minute...it will change!"

There is a SMALL chance of freezing precipitation (mainly NE of the metroplex) for this evening. The school will be open tonight. If the weather begins to worsen, please call the school telephone number to check for updates. As with anything...use your best judgement.

SNAP Graduation is Wednesday 12/17 from 5-6pm.

KFSS Graduation is Saturday 12/20 from 9:30-11am. There will be NO other classes that day! Doors will open at 8:30...come early to get stretched out and warmed up.

The new quarter for KFSS begins 1/5 and for SNAP begins 1/7. Start the year off right by coming to class and working off all the holiday goodies!

The colder it gets...the more you need to stretch! We cannot stress this enough!

Everyone stay warm!

Don't leave valuables in your car, always have someone walk you out to your car at night, and if you are traveling this season...tell a neighbor where you are going and when you will be back! If someone backs up to your home with a moving van...they'll know to call the police!

Don't take this time for granted...be vigilant so that you can enjoy your holiday with no unpleasant interruptions.

See you in class!

Message from Master Robert

Thinking about workouts, practice and experimentation…..

Our workouts are probably the best teachers we have. The instructor gives us a lesson or two and we practice it. Once we’ve ‘mastered’ it, we start mixing it up with other lessons we’ve received. That’s where experimenting comes in…if something comes to mind that seems like it should work, give it a try. It may work beautifully (smooth, efficient, effective) or it may not. If not, spend a few minutes dissecting it to see why not. Maybe an adjustment in targeting, foot position or body reaction needs to be made or maybe it just doesn’t work, or at least work efficiently. That’s okay.

Workouts are the time to find out if something isn’t working because there you have the opportunity to fix it or discard it.
* Experiment with non standard blocks as you may not always be able to execute a perfect text book blocking drill block. As long as the block keeps you from getting hit and sets up and is part of the counter attack, you’ll be okay.
* Get in front of the mirror and allow yourself to be put in a leverage or restraint, then use the mirror to see what you can do to counter it. Keep in mind the counter is most likely the opposite of what you think you should do.
Be creative…use your hands, your legs, you body position, your balance, your BRAIN and don’t forget to relax.
* Oh…and don’t forget CONTROL, either. All of this skill, power, balance, focus and relaxation amounts to chaos without control. Be conscious of you speed and your contact with your partner(s). Be conscious of you your intensity as well as your intent. Control is as much about mental discipline as it is physical regulation. Mental/emotional control is very much a part of maintaining physical control.

Whenever great skill (all of the above) is applied, there must also be great control. KFSS isn’t just about winning the fight and being ‘safe’, it’s also about self respect and respect for others.

Master Robert.

Updates for Week Ending 10/25/08

I hope everyone had a great weekend! The weather was gorgeous!

One thing I've noticed since the beginning of October is the decline in attendance at the 4:30 classes. This happens pretty much every year as kids receive more homework and school activities begin to ramp up going into the holidays and yes even those pesky germs get pasted around and kids start to get sick. This shift in attendance tends to be very seasonal and we generally start to see it pick back up at the beginning of the year. What I would like to remind everyone is that we've always kept this class going and our instructor's are there regardless whether we have kids show up or not as they generally teach the 5:30 class as well. Life can get really hectic. I'd like to encourage you to make the time to have your child in class. Their safety is our utmost concern especially going into Halloween.

Moving on...we need helpers in our SNAP class on Wednesdays. This class has once again exploded in attendance we need to make sure we have enough folks on hand to help with this very important class. If you are a current adult student and are available from 5-6pm on Wednesday night, please contact myself or Master Lisa to let us know you can help.

October 25th 8:30 am-10:30am - Master Darian's Staff Class. If you have ordered at staff, it will be at the school the morning of the class. Enrollment is officially closed at this time due to class size. Class will be held at the school so come early as there will be no official stretching and warming up.

November 8th 1-2:30pm will be our next Black Belt Class...All Black Belts are invited to attend.

November 27th - Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday.

November 29th - 1 Adult class (8:30-9:45am) and 1 Kids class (10:00-11:00am). PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIME FOR THE KIDS CLASS!

Everyone have a great week and we'll see you in class!

Message from Master Robert

Hi all,

I trust you are well.

Some thoughts on ground techniques...think about the hierarchy of the six steps on the dry erase board in the training room. The steps are: relaxation, smoothness, power, control, polish/style and intent. We’ve recently discussed intent via visualization. We’ve recently talked about polish/style, control, power and smoothness. But we always talk about relaxation and breathing. Why...because, it’s the foundation of what we do. If you don’t breath, you can’t relax…besides, it isn’t healthy. If you don’t relax, you won’t perform at your full potential and in some cases, you’ll even fail at KFSS or any other combat art. When you are relaxed, you are less likely to be distracted which means you can PAY ATTENTION to what’s going on around you. Without breathing and relaxation, we’re mediocre at best.

Relax (verb):
1. to make less tense, rigid, or firm; make lax:
5. to release or bring relief from the effects of tension, anxiety, etc.:
(From http://dictionary.reference.com)

Relaxation is a key concept to what we do. As you are going through the drills, exercises, lessons and workouts associated with ground techniques (or any other technique in KFSS for that matter) be conscious of relaxation. If you feel tension setting in, pause and relax. If you tense up, it makes it much easier for the grappler to hang on; if you relax, it makes it much easier to defeat the restraint/hold. Our default posture is tension and rigidity, especially when we feel disadvantaged or threatened. We need to change that default posture to relaxed and compliant (no tension). That means we have to practice relaxation. By the way, being able to relax is as much mental conditioning (visualization helps here) as it is physical conditioning. We have to breathe deeply, stretch, think positive, avoid worry, etc. and we have to practice these things daily, not just during our weekly or bi-weekly visits to class. First, relaxation becomes a habit through practice. Then, it becomes our default posture. When relaxation becomes our default, just about everything will become easier and more efficient…think about it.

See you in class!
Master Robert

Saturday 10/25, Master Darian's first of 3 weapons classes, the Staff. Class is $25, with a staff is $47. Class time is 8:30-10:30a. Adult class to follow IF we hold this class at the school. IF we have to move it off site, we will probably NOT have an adult class but WILL have the kids class at 11:30.

IKE Update

At 5:45 am, Hurrican IKE is NOT expected to impact the DFW area until 2 pm this afternoon. So morning classes for today will NOT be cancelled due to weather. Sp the school will be open and classes will proceed. The black belt class scheduled for 1pm is still on. If the weather begins to deteriorate we will update the website again or call the school number at 817-590-8585.

The weather event expected in our area is expected to be worse to the EAST of the metroplex, be that doesn't mean we should not be prepared for some severe weather in our area. So if you have plans out doors...keep an eye to the sky.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Galveston and Houston areas.

See you in class!

Hurricane IKE

A hurricane in North Texas? OK...well maybe not a hurricane, but tropical storm force winds and heavy rain are anticipated in the DFW area for Saturday and Sunday. As of this moment we have NOT cancelled Saturday classes, but if the weather deteriorates on Saturday as anticipated, we may very well cancel all Saturday classes.

Please check the website Saturday morning BEFORE heading out to class. Any post I make that morning may NOT be received in your email before you leave so log on to www.rkmartialsciences.com to check for closures.

Your safety is our biggest concern. So be safe!

Message from Master Robert

Have you ever noticed how much ‘brain’ training we do? We do a bunch of brain training. Think about how much brain training it took just to learn the blocking drills. Martial arts in general require more brain training than physical training. Kung Fu San Soo is no exception. It takes much more brain training than physical training to become proficient in KFSS. It involves attitude, awareness, focus, observation, conscious (then unconscious) execution of techniques and concepts and more if you think about it. Our brain is our most powerful weapon. The problem is we don’t always bring it to class…which leads to the following:

Visualize – to recall or form mental images or pictures, to make perceptible to the mind or imagination. (From http://dictionary.reference.com)

So…what’s my point, what does this have to do with brain training? Well, it’s this…see it as you do it. Visualizing what you are doing can help you be a more focused and less distracted survivor. Keep in mind some of the things we do inflict a great deal of damage. Visualize that damage as you execute the technique. Visualize the attacker’s reaction and response. Visualize your reaction and response to the damage inflicted. Visualizing puts you in that place; it makes it real in your mind. And if you’ve been there before (in your mind), then when it really happens, it won’t be a strange place that you’ve never visited and therefore it won’t be a distraction from the task at hand which is terminating the threat. As you work out, practice forms, do the Five Wheel Horse, shadow box, go through blocking drills or any other exercise visualize what you are doing. Once again as stated many times by myself, Master Dale and likely Master Larry and Grand Master Woo…That doesn’t mean go fast, hard and out of control; it means to think about it, to pay attention, to be in the moment. You can’t afford to be distracted by the fight itself, you MUST stay focused on surviving the attack so you can eliminate the threat and exit safely. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or anything else KFSS.

Have a great Day and be safe!
Master Robert.

Updates Week Ending 8/30/08

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Many of our students are going back to school this week. Remember to be mindful of school zones and increased traffic. Also, a reminder to students, be confident! Bullies tend to pick on people who they view to be weak. Showing confidence can dissuade a bully from picking you as a target. And should one decide to do so...you do not have to take it! Report it to your school administrators...tell your parents...tell an adult you trust.

On with the updates...

Saturday August 30th there will be ONE adult class from 10-11:15a. The kid's class will follow at its normal time (11:35-12:30).

Monday September 1st we will be CLOSED for the Labor Day Holiday. If you are traveling this weekend or planning out door fun...be safe! Be mindful of your surroundings!

Attendance will be posted on the website for June 30th-August 30th.

Saturday September 13th Master Robert is holding a Black Belt class from 1-2:30.

Wednesday September 25th, SNAP graduation. Many of our students have been in this program going on 4+ years. Come out and support our students.

Saturday September 28th, KFSS Graduation. Even if you are not graduating, come out and support the other students. We have many people moving up in rank AND this marks our first year anniversary as RK Martial Sciences & Fitness. We will have a small reception after graduation so make plans to attend.

With school starting, it may seem hard to find time to train. I want to encourage you to make it a point to schedule time for your kids and yourselves. Life sometimes get really busy, but is important to place emphasis on your safety.

Have a great week!

Kris

College Campus Safety

As fall approaches, many students are college bound. It’s hard to think of anything bad happening, but history tells us bad things can and do happen even in places we believe to be safe.

Recent shootings at several colleges, churches and businesses tell us we can no longer believe ANY place is completely safe. The following is an article posted by Auraria Campus just after the Virginia Tech shootings. It contains some very useful tips for keeping students safe in the event they are presented with a violent encounter while on campus. This can also be applied to businesses and churches and just about any place that is primarily open to the public. It’s important to learn the safety precautions your campus, business or church has in place. Even more important is to realize YOU are in charge of your own personal safety. Most of this information is "brain training" and you don't have to be a martial artist to use it.

We honestly and sincerely hope no one ever needs this type of information, but in the event you do…it COULD save your life.

If you would like to practice…come to the Self Defense Class offered at RKMSF on Friday evenings 5:30-6:30 pm.

Auraria Campus' statement on Virginia Tech shootings
posted by: Sara Gandy Date last updated: 4/16/2007 4:15:47 PM

KUSA - The Auraria Campus released the following statement and information on campus safety after the Virginia Tech shootings Monday.

Statement:

Our hearts go out to the victims and families in the tragic school shootings at Virginia Tech today.

The Auraria Campus has an Emergency Response Plan. The safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors is our primary concern.

Once we were made aware of the school shootings, the Auraria Campus immediately activated the Communication Plan and alerted the Mental Health counselors on campus.

For additional security information for the Auraria Campus, go to: http://www.ahec.edu/

Safety Notice:

SAFTEY BULLETIN FOR THE AURARIA CAMPUS On Monday, April 16, 2007, at approximately 7:15 a.m. a major critical incident took place on the campus of Virginia Tech in Virginia. A lone gunman took the lives of at least 31 people and wounded many others before taking his own life. Our hearts and thoughts go out the Students, Faculty and Staff of the Virginia Tech community. We caution all members of the Auraria community to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity/person immediately to the Auraria Campus Police Department.

Keeping Yourself Safe on Campus

Always be aware of what is going on around you. Many violent situations unfold the same general way - a person makes threats or threatening comments. They show up at the business, school or workplace dressed in military style clothing or inappropriate clothing, i.e. a trench coat in the summer, and pulls out a firearm and starts calmly and methodically firing. Look for people acting strangely or dressed inappropriately. Take threats seriously.

Believe what you see. As events unfold in front of you, trust your eyes, as your ears hear the gunfire, people running, or screaming. Many people report that they thought the event wasn't real. They think it is a movie or a joke. Stay aware of what is happening around you, and trust your instincts that something is wrong - believe the warning!

Hit the ground! Your first priority is to get out of the line of fire. Get on the ground immediately and assess your escape routes. Do not hesitate, move!

Find cover. Get behind something that will stop bullets, not just conceals you. High powered bullets can penetrate a large amount of materials. Look for brick walls, planters, mailboxes, cars, thick trees.

Put distance between yourself and the shooter. Your chances for survival in a gunfight rise dramatically the further you are from the gunman. Stay down and crawl away from the origin of the shooting. Try to get better cover or escape out of a door or window. Just get out.

Escape! If you have been trapped by gunfire, if there is a noticeable dramatic silence in the shooting, the gunman may have run out of ammunition and is either reloading or switching to another weapon. If at all possible, move to an exit to escape.

Call 911 or 303-556-5000 from a cell phone! As soon as it is safe, call the police giving them a location, description, make of weapon, and any injuries.

Chances are that you will never need this advice. However, being present when violence erupts is often unpredictable. The mental attitude of survival is your best defense.

These tips are provided courtesy of the Auraria Campus Police Department. Reporting any suspicious behavior can help keep you and the campus safe.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY: The Auraria Campus Police Department urges everyone to use caution.

If anything suspicious occurs or you are the victim of a crime, immediately contact the Auraria Campus Police Department from any campus phone or at 303-556-5000 from your cell phone. Be aware of the Blue Light emergency telephones in the parking lots. Use these telephones to report all suspicious persons or incidents to the Auraria Police.

WE BELIEVE IN SAFETY FIRST!

Summer Thoughts from Master Robert

Hello Everyone,

Just some thoughts as we enter the Summer Semester, some things to think about as you go through the drills, workouts and lessons.

Martial Arts in general and especially Kung Fu San Soo offer many benefits: e.g. exercise, concentration/focus, relaxation, flexibility, stress relief, enjoyment, camaraderie and, of course, self defense/counter offense. When you work out, what do you intend to accomplish? You need to come to class with a specific goal…maybe work certain leverages or grabs, target more effectively, get your heart rate up or any number of other things. How about when you execute blocking drills, work out or do lessons: What’s your intent? Think about what you’re doing, how you’re doing it and why you’re doing it. Ask yourself, “Would what I did just now save me from an attack?” Your intent should be to devastate the attacker. This doesn’t mean go fast, hard and out of control…it means think about what you are doing. Work out with intent.

How about visiting a class you don’t normally visit? Doing this will give you a different perspective on the art…it’s still the same art, but from someone else’s perspective. None of us know it all. Master Lisa has been to different classes than I have. I’ve been to different classes than Jacob. Jacob has been to different classes than Harry. Harry has been to different classes than Tim. Tim has been to different classes than Kris. Kris has been to different classes than Mike. Mike has been to different classes than Jamie and Jamie has been to different classes than Master Lisa. We are all learning the same art, but we’ve all seen it a little differently. Visit another class, you might be surprised.

Take a few brochures and business cards. Lots of places have bulletin boards for stuff like that. If you see one, put a couple of brochures or cards on it. Let’s spread the word!

Thank you for being the best part of who we are…you’re awesome!

Be safe!
Master Robert.

Now I've got renewed energy for classes! :-D

Update for Week Ending 6/28/08

KFSS Graduation is this Saturday!!!!! Doors open at 8:30, Pictures at 9:20 and Graduation will begin promptly at 9:30. Come and support those are moving up in rank!

Tuition is due on July 1st. Please let Kris know if you have changed credit cards or if there are arrangements that need to be made.

July 4th & 5th - RKMSF will be closed for the holiday. Everyone enjoy a safe and happy 4th of July.

The decline in economic conditions is being felt by all of us. High fuel and food costs are eating away at income normally reserved for things like Kung Fu. We've had several kids who have had to drop due to economics. Some of these kids really NEED to be in Kung Fu. If you are in a position to sponsor a child, please let me know.

Remember to stay alert! Pay attention to your surroundings! Don't make yourself a target!

See you in class!

Message from Master Dale

Some of you may not have gotten this message from Master Dale and I would like to pass it on! I have opened this for reader comments if you would like to send a PUBLIC message to Master Dale and his family.

Hi all,

It has been my pleasure to have served you here in Texas since 1995 with the most honest and effective personal protection and life skills training available. While leading Kung Fu San So of Texas, I was honored by the commitment of hundreds of people who established personal development goals, worked and toughed it out to make them happen, and irreversibly grew as a result of the experience.

Many black belts - all of whom climbed a personal mountain to attain their rank, and even Masters of the Art were a result of our combined efforts. I always learned something from each of you - just as Grandmaster Jimmy Woo swore would happen. One of the many truths of the art of San Soo. How many San Soo truths have you taken the time to discover in repayment for the thousands of generations who developed this art for you?

Many of you do not know the details of my family's relocation, so I will brief you on where we're going and what we're doing.

I'll be leaving in the morning for my new assignment in Lexington, Ky. and will be assuming the position of Area Vice President for an exciting, privately held billion dollar company with very aggressive growth objectives. You know how well that description aligns with my personality!

I will be leading a team of 70+ sales, management, operations and administrative personnel in several states. It is an enormous challenge and providing solid discipline and clear direction are my orders - there has been an absence of strong leadership with a clear view of the direction the organization expects. This characteristic will destabilize even the most committed team. Your school has strong and committed leadership...have you taken the temperature of your commitment to yourself and your growth in San Soo lately?

I'll share with you my plans to turn the operation into what is expected.

First, the 4 A's I rely upon to put positive action into motion: Assessment, Alignment, Accountability and Acceleration. It is imperative that we honestly and accurately Assess the place we are in, and each and every team member's strengths and growth opportunities.

Then we'll compare the current reality to the expectation of the company: the Alignment phase. After determining the 'critical goal categories' that will close the most significant gaps, assignment and Accountabilities will be established through those who hold leadership positions, and then evaluation of performance will be performed.

Finally, Acceleration. The faster we can close the large gaps, the faster we move toward satisfying the vision. Then we shift to 2nd tier goals and repeat the efforts. Then we be in control. Think any of this can be applied to you, your work, family, martial arts training or life? Only if you really want to accomplish something of value.

How will I as a literal stranger walk in and establish this momentum as soon as possible? First, as the leader I must. That's non-negotiable. Anyone who chooses to not participate, contribute or accept accountability, will be replaced. This isn't being unfriendly or heavy handed...it's business. Threat-based management however, is the worst form of leadership, so the entire buy-in will be based upon a simple quote that will become the mantra that will deliver the results and culture we want:

"None of us is as good as all of us!"

That quote made me think of your Kung Fu school. Our school, and how we grew in so many life changing ways. Together.

It has been my honor to be teacher, student, servant and trusted adviser to all of the wonderful people who are the school. I hope to always remain a valued friend to our San Soo family and remember, I'm only a phone call or mouse click away.

All my best - now, challenge yourself to FINISH SOMETHING! (Like a black belt...)

Master Dale

6/17 Weather Update

There is another storm taking aim at the DFW metroplex. Like earlier today...these storms are fast moving dumping large amounts of rain and packing heavy winds. As it is still difficult to tell exactly where they will land, please use your best judgement. I WILL be at the school for the 4:30/5:30 class as I would have to drive into the storms to get home, sooo if you are brave enough to brave the weather...I'll be there.

As always, keep an eye to the sky and use your best judgement.

Kris

Weekly Updates 6/17/08

OK...who turned up the thermostat! It's HOT!!!! Well...it is summer in Texas!

With the summer comes a change in schedules for many people as folks are vacationing. Parents...please do not DROP your kids for a class before determining if there will be enough students to make a class. Its hard to have a class with ONE student. This has not been an issue at the 6:30 kids class but has been at the 4:30 kids class. So please check before you leave.

The Friday 6:30-8pm KFSS Adult class has been temporarily suspended as attendance has dropped due to summer activities. This class will start up again in September.

Coming events:

6/20 - 2nd Session of Self Defense class begins. Class is $45 for non-KFSS students and is from 5:30-6:30 on Friday evenings. This session will meet on 6/20, 6/27, 7/11 and 7/18. This class is free for current adult KFSS students and will count as class credit.

6/25 - SNAP Graduation

6/28 - KFSS Graduation - I still need belt fees from a few folks who are moving from white to yellow belt. Graduation will begin at 9:30a, doors will open at 8:30 so get there early!

7/1 - July KFSS tuition is due. SNAP tuition is due on July 2nd for the Summer session.

7/4&5 - RKMSF will close for the 4th of July Holiday. If you are traveling...remember to be aware of your surroundings.

July 25th - Instructors Meeting. 8pm. At the end of our meeting...Master Darian will provide a special lesson for all instructor's in attendance. We're looking for a new place to eat too, so keep that in mind and bring suggestions!

August 9th - Instructors Class - Instructors and IDs are encouraged to attend. Class will be conducted by Master Robert and will run from 12:45-2pm.

Remember your summer safety tips! Drink plenty of fluids and take plenty of breaks...and make sure you're stretching!

Stay cool!
Kris

Message from Master Robert

As Kris posted on the web site, there is a strong possibility that my company – Lee Technologies – will have a big project in McKinney starting up in the next 6 weeks or so. It should last about 12-15 months. We start on the design portion this week and they want the first phase done by the end of March, which means they need to get moving…a lot faster than their current speed. This may not have me in DFW all the time but it certainly will allow me to be here about half the time so I’ll be able to visit everyone’s classes periodically…not to mention seeing my wife! I’ll keep you posted as things develop.

Also, on the 2nd Saturday of the month (beginning August 9th), we are going to have an instructors’ class and a black belt only class. These two classes will alternate months. The first (Aug 9) will be an instructors (and IDs) class. Everyone should be back from vacation by then. It will be after the Kids’ class from 12:45 to 2:00ish. The structure for the instructors’ class will be a little different than the regular classes. Stretching will be up to you but sometimes we will do the Five Wheel Horse or some of the other Qi Gong exercises. The black belt class will follow the standard format a little more closely giving the upper belts an opportunity to work out with their peers. Both classes will center on the theme for the semester.

Please mark these dates on your calendars and make plans to attend these special classes.

Sincerely,
Master Robert

MTV Highlights Martial Arts

MTV's hit TV show MADE will be highlighting the Martial Arts this weekend. One of the most important things to remember is the emphasis on character development. Here is the press release with all the information:

MILWAUKEE, WI June 9, 2008 -- MADE, the extremely popular MTV show, has selected an episode filmed in Wisconsin for its 100th episode.

In this show, Master Chan Lee coaches a small-town Wisconsin teenager who is on mission to be "MADE" into a martial artist.

The premier airing of this episode is scheduled for June 14th at 1:00PM Central Time on MTV. A brief trailer for this show can be seen at this web page: http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1588167

Lee, a martial arts trainer for college athletes and martial arts champions, said "After more than 30 years of martial arts training and coaching, working with this Wisconsin teenager (whose identity is secret until after the initial showing) has been one of my most rewarding experiences. I'm excited to see how the episode turns out after more than 100 hours of filming."

During past seasons, each episode of MADE followed one willing candidate as they embarked on a mission to transform their life. Whether it was becoming a varsity football player, the homecoming queen or a cheerleader, each teenager dreamed of breaking out of their shell and finding out what they were really made of and what they could achieve when given the tools and training. This is the first episode of MADE where the candidate wanted to be transformed into a hardcore martial arts fighter.

Master Lee was selected as the celebrity coach of this episode following a selective interview process by MTV and was required to be away for most of the six weeks of filming from JK Lee Black Belt Academy, Lee's five martial arts schools in the metro Milwaukee area. Lee said "At our schools, martial arts is primarily about personal character development instead of just kicking and punching. That is what I emphasized during the training. I think parents as well as teens will gain some real value by watching this episode."

For more information on the MTV show MADE, visit http://www.made.mtv.com.

Make plans to watch (or TIVO)!

June 9th Updates

Wow! We had a great seminar with Master Dale on Saturday! New techniques and ways of addressing situations that will boggle the mind! ;-) DVD's will be on sale later this week. If you are interested in one, please let me know. Please make all payments to Dale Lockwood.

June 25th - SNAP Graduation

June 28th KFSS Graduation - All those moving from white to yellow belt please make sure your belt fees are paid by 6-14. Everyone who is moving in belt rank needs to make sure I have your belt sizes (00-8) by the 14th as well.

July 4th - RKMSF will be closed July 4th and 5th and re-open on July 7th. I hope everyone has a great and safe holiday weekend.

Those of us who were at the seminar on Saturday heard this announcement from Master Dale, but I wanted to pass this on so those who couldn't be there will know...

Master Dale has accepted a position with a company and will be moving to Lexington, KY with Kathy and Raven. This position is a huge opportunity for him and while his presence will be sorely missed, we wish him all success! Master Dale will be reporting to work on June 23rd and Kathy and Raven will join him once arrangements have been made for their move. Please take a moment and wish them well on their new adventure!

Master Darian will be returning to RKMSF with his girlfriend and will be training on Tues and Thursday evenings. He will be available to help with lessons and we may even be able to persuade him to teach a class or two! Be sure to welcome him back and let him know how much he's been missed.

Master Robert's company has signed the paperwork on a job in McKinney and this will enable him to be back in the DFW area and at the school more often. I'll let everyone know exact dates as they become available, but July is the target so keep your fingers crossed!

Whew! It was a very busy weekend! As we get into the summer season, kids are out of school and families are vacationing, take a moment to look at your schedules. Did you schedule time to train? Training keeps us vigilant and keeps our minds and bodies engaged in being aware of our surroundings. So make your Kung Fu training a priority!

I hope everyone has a great week!
Kris

Message from Master Robert

Purpose...

What was the reason you joined Kung Fu? For most it was probably self defense, exercise or both. For some, it was to help build confidence and other reasons. Whatever your reason, did you set goals or benchmarks? How are you doing with it and has it changed?

Even if you are doing very well towards your goal or goals, this may help and it’s something you’ve heard before. When you come to class, come with a purpose, something specific. It may be something that you can accomplish in one or two classes. Or, it could be something that you may work on for several weeks or more. The point is to have a goal, an attainable target. Doing this gives you a progression of events as you move toward your final goal so you can see how you’re doing toward your goal(s), the reason you’re here in the first place. An example might be ‘glaring at the knot’, the center of gravity, so you can see what’s coming next. We all want to look into the eyes because the eyes are the windows to the soul and it shows confidence especially in social situations; but when it become a little more (or a lot more) aggressive you need to glare at the knot to see what coming at you. As you go through your blocking drills, your work outs, etc, pay attention to your glare. I catch myself looking the next weapon especially in blocking drills which then carries over to workouts and lessons. Another example might sweeps. How many different can you think of and how many ways to set them up. Grabs, leverages, spinning strikes specific targets, blend, flow and yield…there’s lots of concepts and techniques for a concentrated focus. When you’re working on something specific, tell your partner so they can help…they will learn something too! Think about it…

There are three weeks left in the semester, there’s still time to get your classes in. Graduation is June 28.

This Saturday, June 7 is Master Dale’s 2nd installment of Escapes, Evasions and Counters. We start at 8:30 and there are still a few spots available as this will preempt the regular adult 8:30 class. There will be an adult class at 10:30, with kids at 11:30.

Thanks everyone…keep up the good work!
Master Robert.

June 2nd Updates

Here we are...the first week of June. Graduation is June 28th so make sure you get your classes in. A new list will be posted at the school and on this website by the end of this week.

I'd like to take this opportunity to make an observation:

I've been contacted by an increasing number of people telling me they are taking the summer off or taking a couple of months off. I'd like you to consider that while everyone needs a vacation, its important to make time to train. Your personal safety is even more important during the summer months. Its important to keep your children active and their brains engaged in their own safety during the summer months. It's easy to get caught up in all the fun, but please be aware of your surroundings.

I'd also like to remind everyone that we ask you give us a 30 days notice before leaving the school. While we understand that life doesn't always work in a way that allows this but please make every effort to contact us in advance of needing to leave the school.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the school telephone number.

Have a great week and we'll see you in class!

May 12 Updates

Good Morning!

Did you know that TOO much work results in overall inefficiency. Now more than ever, we need to take a little time for ourselves - and RKMSF is the best therapy...where else can you end your workday by hitting someone, having them get back up and ask you to do it again! Talk about cathartic! Here is an interesting article...do you see yourself here? I do!

Escapes, Evasions and Counters II

I received this note from Master Dale today about his June 7th Seminar. Looks like another action packed two hours! Don't forget to sign up early! Registration sheet is on the white board in the lobby!

Kris,
The June 7th seminar will once again, be chock-full of 'new and different' ways to look at combative problem solving.

Escapes, Evasions and Counters II - will explore the following - and more!

  • Stealing the bad guy's advantage: or Why haven't we practiced this before? This will be half the session.
  • Protecting the 3rd Person (Executive Protection techniques)
  • More ways to use the Helping Hand
  • Breaking capture while walking

These are 4 subject areas that are best learned by doing. These are low in conceptual content and high in practice effort. This seminar will be one where we are in constant motion for nearly the entire time. Expect numerous lessons and variations that will teach each person how to solve problems they may not have faced in the classroom before.

This will be fun!

May Updates

Here we are folks...the first full week of May! Can you believe it! Just short of 1/2 way thru 2008! WOW!

Here some things happening for the month of May and June:

#1 A brand new Self Defense Class will begin on Friday, May 16th from 5:30-6:30pm. This will be a 4 week class meeting 1 night a week(Friday). This is a great way to learn the basics of surviving a violent encounter. It is also a great way to get your feet wet in Kung Fu San Soo. This class will cover the basic psychology of predators, how to avoid becoming a victim and what to do if you are attacked. Cost for non-KFSS students is $45 per 4 week session.

#2 The third installment of Master Dale's seminar series will be Saturday June 7th from 8:30-10:30 a.m. The cost is $25 per person and is open to all students ages 13 and up. There will be an adult class immediately following and the kids class will be at its regular time. More seminar details to follow so keep watching the website.

#3 If you have not already done so, please get your tuition in to Ms. Kris this week.

#4 There will be an ID/instructor's meeting on Friday, May 16th at 8pm at the school. Please make every effort to be there. If you know your summer schedule...bring that with you.

The tentative promotion list will be posted on Monday May 19th. If you have missed classes...now is the time to get them in instead of waiting til the end of the semester.

See you in class!

Get Kidz Fit Demo and Updates

WOW! We have some of the best people at RKMSF! A HUGE Thanks to Autumn, Geordan, Spencer, Eli and Samantha for the demonstration of Kung Fu San Soo skills and exercises. You guys ROCK! Another HUGE thank you to Fred, Monra, Eli and Jeff for their assistance! We couldn't have done it without you!

We got some great feedback and the crowd really loved our kids! Master Robert and I are very proud of each and everyone of you!

Tuition is due this week on Thursday. I will be traveling to PA Wed-Fri, but will be available by cell phone.

There are just over 2 months left before graduation. Make sure you're on track to make your attendance goals. Attendance numbers and a tentative promotion schedule will be posted mid-May.

See you in class!

Forbidden Kingdom

I took my 8 year old nephew (a brown belt in American Karate), my mom and sister-n-law to see Forbidden Kingdom last night. WOW! The action was pretty non-stop and Jackie Chan and Jet Li had some fantastic fight scenes. While I won't give the movie away...I was pleased to see almost every style of Kung Fu (Gung Fu) represented in the film. If you listen very carefully to Jackie Chan's expanation of one particular style...you'll recognize San Soo! I was also pleasantly surprise to see so many things I recognized in the fighting styles. They stayed very true to the arts and while there were some jaw dropping effects...anyone who is a martial artist can truly appreciate the fight sequences. I give it 4 out of 5 stars (ok...so the editing needed a little work). It is a really clean film and good for the whole family. Have fun!

Coming Up....

April 18th....
This weekend is the opening for the new Jet Li-Jackie Chan movie Forbidden Kingdom. This film is rated for the whole family and is being heralded by the Martial Arts Industry as one of the best Martial Arts films in recent times. So take your family and friends to see Forbidden Kingdom and don't forget to wear your RK Martial Sciences or Kung Fu San Soo of Texas T-Shirts!

April 24th...
Transition and Disabilities Expo, TCU, Ft. Worth, TX
(http://www.gcisd-k12.org/specialsvs/images/transition.pdf)
Master Lisa and I will be at the Tarrant County Transitions & Disabilities Expo promoting RK Martial Sciences SNAP and Kung Fu San Soo programs. The expo is from 4-7pm and is an opportunity to reach out to people who may not fit in more competitive martial arts programs.

April 26th...11:30 Kids Class Cancelled for just this day.
Help Get Kidz Fit! (www.getkidzfit.org) On April 26th, Master Robert and I will take 5 students to the Get Kidz Fit Expo at Fair Park's Centennial Hall from 1-4pm. We are the only Martial Arts school to have been invited so this is a fantastic opportunity to not only promote OUR school but Martial Arts in general! There will be all kinds of games and people demonstrating ways for kids to get up from in front of the computer and get moving! Even ways to stay in front of the computer and move at the same time! So if you're looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon...come out and join us!

Everyone have a great weekend! We'll see you in class!

Thursday Classes Cancelled

I hope everyone survived the storms in the wee hours of this morning. I know many people are still without power.

As of 11:18am today the power at the school is still out and I can get no estimated time as to when it will be back on from ONCOR power. SO...I feel the most prudent thing to do is CANCEL today's classes.

For those who live in areas hard hit by the storm, let us know if we can be of help. Take care and we will see you in class on Friday and Saturday!

Power should be back on RIGHT? :-)

Volunteers Needed!

If you've been looking for ways to get involved in the school...here are two very unique and special ways:

1) Our Special Needs class has once again grown to about 24 students! WOW! This is a GREAT problem to have! However with this many students we need additional volunteers to help! If you are an instructor, id, or a student with the time and willingness to help, please let Master Lisa know or send an email to Miss Kris. Class is on Wednesday evening from 5-6pm.

2) We have been invited to participate in the "Help Kids Get Fit" Health Fair at Fair Park on April 26th inside the Centennial Hall. This would be a 20 minute demonstration of both the physical and mental aspects of our art. I need volunteers from our kids who can be available from 1-4p on that day. I also need several adult students to help. Please let me know if you are available and want to show your stuff. This will be the biggest audience by far we have EVER given a demonstration to. It is an exciting way to show people what we do and the benefits Kung Fu San Soo can provide.

I need to have an answer by Thursday 4/10 so that I can let the Get Kids Fit folks know.

As of 2:44pm, a tornado WATCH has been posted for all of North Texas until 9pm. Storms are starting to move into the area but as of yet are not well organized. This will most likely change as we go through the evening.

The school will be open for the 4:30 class and we'll be keeping an eye on the storms to determine if we STAY open.

Please call the school at 817.590.8585 if you have any questions.
